2012 Tough Mudders

Posted on May 15th, 2012 12:05 by POCO

On 12 & 13 May the GVFB did something very unusual – setting fire to things and later extinguishing them.  For some reason 9,000 people ran through smoking inferno and paid good money for the privilege.  Feedback was very positive and many thanks to the 8 Firemen and one Fireman’s Wife that turned out and ran the “Fire-Walker” so successfully.  Thanks also to Tough Mudder for the tee-shirts and donation of nutritional refreshment.  Here are some photos from the Sunday.  Firemen Sharman G, Barber and Brown G manned the barricade on Saturday with Fireman Rowley who did both days with appreciation of Mrs Rowley.  Thanks also to Fireman Sparrow for his support during quite a busy day.

2012 Newton Field Centre

Posted on April 28th, 2012 05:04 by POCO

Thirteen brave firemen donned protective clothing ventured to Newton Field Centre, axes, torches, saws and wheelbarrows at the ready.  They chopped, moved and burnt weeds, unwanted logs and gravel, proving that the Fire Brigade can also start fires.

Help was gratefully received from the Head of the Centre and Spouse.  Refreshment was ably cooked by the Community Officer.  To find out more about Newton Field Centre and the good work done there follow this link: http://www.newtonfieldcentre.org.uk/

Comments about the CO’s poor posture would be superfluous.

Congratulations to all the entrants to the 2012 GVFB “bake-off” for the excellent and tasty efforts.
The three winning Pieketeers were:

  1. Section Leader Byers with Fish Surprise
  2. Brigade Major Streatfield with Traditional Steak and Kidney (his first ever pie)
  3. Fireman Downhill with Traditional Cornish Pasties

Thanks to all the entrants and better luck next year.

Next year Games night will run from Thursday 3rd January to Thursday 31st January 2013, the next great GVFB “bake-off”.  Entrants are required to provide a baked pasta dish sufficient for four.  The judges’ word is law.  (For those in doubt, the key concept is “Italian”).
