GVFB Three Peaks Challenge – SUCCESS!!

The CO would like to say a “Big thank you” to the 4 support team member, the 10 three peak conquerors,the 7 Snowdon walkers, Jim Harker and David C-J and their wives for their encouragement and champagne at the start of the final leg, to those guys at the start of the planning process for their help in convincing me it was possible. Brilliant!

2010 Boxing Day Squirt

On a bright and chilly morning the GVFB broke the ice on the Ford and cleared the ramps, determined that the Squirt go ahead. The Squirt itself was hindered by both the GVFB pumps being frozen.

The Brigades of Kettering and Burton Latimer came to the rescue, lending their spare portable to the GVFB and reducing their fighting pressure.

The reduced pressure was a blessing as less water reached parts of Firemen that it shouldn’t and hypothermia was avoided (helped by warming food afterwards at the Star). The combined force of Kettering and Burton Latimer were ultimately victors, 3-2.

Thanks to all the crowds, to the Brigades, to the Star and to the Mayor of Kettering for supporting the event. Donations to the Fire Fighters charity please. Pictures courtesy of Brigade Major Miles.

2010 Senior Citizens’ Meal and Entertainment

On Saturday 9th October 2010 over 70 Geddington Senior Citizens sat down for a 3 course dinner provided by the GVFB. They were then entertained in the spirit of Old Time Variety Theatre by The Singing Magician, a comedian, a couple of sketches and the GVFB Pot Belly Babes. The picture is of the “How to speak Swedish” sketch.

2010 August Community Work

Over the Bank Holiday weekend 8 Firemen decorated the storage cupboard used by the Senior Citizens Luncheon Club at the Village Hall and cleared areas to the front and rear of the Primary School. Thank you to Community Officer Andrew Hammond for organising the work and everyone involved for their time and effort.

Firemen Doran, Hammond, Streatfield and Wilkinson emptied, cleaned and decorated the storage cupboard used by the Senior Citizens Luncheon Club at the Village Hall.

Firemen Colwill, Dibble, Downhill, Hammond, Paragreen also spent 4 hours clearing areas to the front and rear of the Primary School of undergrowth following a request from the Governors.

2010 Visit of Fire Brigade Society

Over 20 members of the Fire Brigade Society, led by Dave Smith, were hosted by John Doran (Station Officer), David Hall (Chief Engineer) and John Wilkinson (Adjutant) at the Fire Station to inspect the Queen Eleanor. The Queen Eleanor is a unique survivor of her type and is kept in full working order by GVFB but the members of the FBS seemed to know more about the engine than most members of the GVFB, many being ex-Fire-fighters. One of the visitors has even seen the engine in action at Bitteswell airfield where she was unkindly known as “the beast”. David Hall confirmed that the Queen Eleanor is hard to drive as she has no synchromesh, no power steering and poor brakes but we still love her.

The Queen Eleanor showed that she is still full of life by taking a full crew to the Cross and through the ford. Wayne Gilmore of the FBS has kindly provided these photographs.

Luckily a gentleman saw an article about the visit in the Evening Telegraph and has kindly donated some operating manuals to the Brigade as his Father used to drive a Nubian at RAE Bedford.

2010 Trundle Preparation or 3 Men & a Boat

If you had always thought that the course for The Trundle was made up on the day here’s proof positive otherwise. Station Officer Doran (Moley?), PoCO Seddon (Ratty?) and PMC Ward (Badger?) messing about in boats in order to finely tune the first major challenge that would face the teams.

The conclusions were that if they had to row the boat the course time would be over an hour, if the person in the boat weighed more than 12 stones the water wasn’t deep enough to float and, the water is cold.

2010 Lahnstein Trip

11 Firemen and families sampled the delights of fabulous German hospitality, visited the spectacular town of Cochem on the Mosel, nightclubs in Koblenz (younger travellers), enjoyed a barbeque by the Rhine and the spectacle of the “Rhine in Flames” fireworks. We also toured the site of next years National Garden Show at Koblenz, which will be well worth visiting.
